Ubuntu has introduced a preview of Myna, its local dictation tool. It turns speech into text inside an application and, once the model has been downloaded, can transcribe without an internet connection. It is still under development.

A useful change for everyday work

What interests BeroIT is the practical use: drafting a message, noting an idea or writing when a keyboard is awkward. The value of a tool like this lies in how much it helps with an everyday task, beyond the impact of the announcement.

The BeroIT perspective

In IT support, I would test dictation with the microphone, language and applications each person uses. I would review the result before sending it and check how the destination application stores the text. Convenient transcription also needs a clear workflow.
